Making SEO Friendly Website

The World Wide Web is giant size library on the internet. It consists of information on almost any type of subject that are of interest to the people at large. It is so big that there are now endless number of web sites and pages. If you have a website hosted on the internet, you would certainly wish that it is seen and viewed by more and more number of people. You would wish to increase the popularity of your site.

But there are also other websites just like yours that people can have access to. So how to rank high in major search engine rankings like Google, MSN and Yahoo.

The solution looks easy but in reality it is not so. To get a top position in search engines results, your website must have web traffic or internet traffic. But how this can be achieved? Well this technique is known as Search Engine Optimization or SEO. The internet experts use this technique to drive traffic to any kind of website or blog so that that the chances of a website to be visited by prospective customers is greater.

To use Search Engine Optimization to get on the top of the list of search engines results, quite a few effective methods can be applied.

An algorithm is used by the search engines to give priority to the keywords selected when a user on the internet finds something. The algorithm is a procedure set for transporting mathematical equations to come out with some output. It is now a belief that there are about 200 factors required to create more traffic to a website. Only the search engine creators know how this technique works. However, let us discuss certain things that support Search Engine Optimization.

*

Title Tag

The title tags of the Hypertext Mark-up Language (HTML) page have a title tag. It contains the information about the topic of your website. The search engine spiders read this information and are used to prioritize keywords. Therefore, using the keywords in the title tag, in the heading, subheadings, and body of an HTML page is of great importance.

*

Heading Tag

The H1 heading tag should have the heading of the page. The title tag should clearly relate to the main heading of the page.

*

Keywords

In SEO using the right keywords for your web page is important. The keywords are used with the purpose of catching attention of search engine spiders, to improve the internet traffic. Many books are also available that teaches and provides detailed information in detail for using keywords in the right manner.

These are the 3 main techniques you can apply for Search Engine Optimization. It is already clear that there are more than 200 things to keep in mind to optimize your web page. The knowledge of using title tags, heading tags, and keywords is the right way to begin to achieve high in the top 10 listings of search engines results. There are many search engine optimization services available. Remember, your website designing should be SEO friendly.

Metrics For Choosing the Best Keywords

Choosing keywords is more complicated than simply choosing the keywords that you assume people search for most often. Doing so usually results in lack of traffic and/or lack of sales. Either you might not get sufficient traffic from those keywords or those keywords might not convert well. Here are some metrics to consider for choosing the best keywords to target with your website.

Keyword Search Volume

It is very important to know which keywords get frequent searches through the major search engines. There is no point in targeting a keyword that gets very few daily searches. You need keywords that will produce enough traffic to sustain your business. Of course you don't want to just sustain your business - you want it to thrive and flourish. So you'll need to target the high volume keywords that can bring you the increase in traffic and sales that you desire.

It is relatively easy to get approximate keyword search volume statistics. Google has several free tools that will show this data for searches done on Google and their search network. There are also various tools that give estimates for Yahoo & MSN. The free tools have limited accuracy though. For more precise predictions, you may want to consider investing in some paid keyword tools. Even if you can't get precise numbers, you can still use keyword tools to compare one keyword to another.

Keyword Competitiveness

Unfortunately you can't just target the highest volume keywords and automatically get great search engine rankings for those keywords. Higher volume keywords are usually the most competitive within a niche. When a keyword is more competitive your website needs to be more relevant than all the other websites that are targeting that keyword. To make the search engines think that your website is more relevant for a particular keyword you need to wisely use that keyword throughout your website. More importantly, you need lots of quality websites to link to your website using that keyword as link anchor text. Since keywords have varying levels of competitiveness, you should be targeting keywords that you can realistically get good rankings for. You need to consider your resources, time and seo knowledge.

Gauging the level of competition can be difficult. Some people simply check how many results show up in Google for that keyword, but that tells you very little. That tells you how many websites either have that keyword on their website or in their links. It doesn't tell you how many websites are aggressively targeting that keyword and how strong those websites are.

To see how many websites are aggressively targeting a keyword, you can check how many websites use that keyword in their links and in their page title. In Google use the 'inanchor:keyword' command to see how many websites use that specific keyword in their backlinks. Also in Google, use the 'intitle:keyword' command to see how many websites include that keyword in their page title. You can even combine those commands to see who is targeting the keyword aggressively enough that the keyword is in both their title & backlinks.

Next you will want to check how strong each of those websites is. The most important factor to consider here is backlinks. There are various ways to analyze a website's link profile, but I recommend you use the SEO for Firefox add-on. This will show you many important stats right in your searches. You need to consider how many links those websites have and how strong each of those linking websites is. It also helps to know how many of their links are used to target the specific keyword in question.

Keyword Relevancy

When you start compiling a potential keyword list, you will notice that some keywords are highly relevant and some may only be mildly relevant. Obviously you will want to target the keywords that are most relevant to your website.

For each potential keyword, you should ask yourself "could this searcher be looking for something other than what I offer?" Try to make an educated guess about what percentage is likely looking for what you specifically offer. Usually the broader a keyword is, the less relevant it is. A more exact keyword usually converts better because the searcher already knows exactly what they want. They are essentially pre-qualified potential customers.

When a keyword is highly irrelevant it is usually not worth the effort it takes to target it. For example, don't waste your time going after competitor company names or brand names only offered by your competitors. You might get traffic from those keywords, but most people would quickly hit the back button when they don't find what they want. Only target keywords where the searcher can easily find what they are looking for on your website.

Summary

Do not take keyword research lightly. It is an extremely important part of marketing a website. Without the right keywords, you will not succeed. So take the time to do thorough keyword research before you start doing any website marketing.

You need to consider important keyword selection metrics: search volume, competitiveness and relevancy. Combine all of that research to choose the keywords that have the best balance of all three metrics. A keyword is only good if it can satisfy all your needs.

Church Marketing Through On-Page Optimization

Are the pages of your website optimized for the search engines? On-page optimization is the essence of search engine optimization and the key to targeting the keywords that can make your website a success.

What is On-Page Optimization?
On-page optimization refers to all the optimization done on the actual pages of your website. This includes both visible elements, like optimizing text, and behind-the-scenes work, like optimizing META tags. Search Engine Optimization has essentially three main parts, keyword research, on-page optimization, and track/reporting. (You could also technically include link building). These elements of SEO could also be described as research, implementation, and tracking the results. On-page optimization is the implementation stage of search engine optimization. With on-page optimization, you target specific keywords and help the search engines to rank you well for these keywords. (If you’re not sure what keywords to target, read our article on Keyword Research).

On-page optimization can be one of the cheapest and more rewarding forms of church marketing you can do.

On-Page Optimization Elements:
The optimization of a web page involves several different elements of the page. Below I’ll go through these elements and discuss a little about them:

Title Tag: This is one of the most important elements in on-page optimization. The Title tag is an element found in the head of the page. Look for the title and /title tags. What comes between these tags is the Title tag. The Title tag is visible to visitors, but not in the body of the page, rather it is displayed in the top bar of the web browser. The Title tag should be a short description of the page and should contain the keywords you want to target for that page.

Description META Tag: The description tag is not as heavily weighted as the Title tag, but it should still be optimized. It is located in the head of the page, usually just below the title tag. The coding for the description tag is meta name="description" content="”. The text used between the quotes after content= is the description META tag. The description tag is not seen on the web page, but some search engines do use the description tag in the search listings. The description tag can be longer than the title tag, but should still be relatively short and should contain each of the keywords you are targeting.

Keyword META Tag: The keyword tag is honestly all but ignored by the search engines at this point, but it should still be optimized. Every little bit helps. It is located in the header of the page, usually just below the title tag. The coding for the description tag is meta name=" keywords" content="”. The text used between the quotes after content= is the keyword META tag. The keyword tag is not seen on the web page or anywhere else. Keyword should be separated by a comma and a space, and keywords should not be repeated (i.e. “church, Lutheran church, youth group”). Notice that “church” and “Lutheran church” are considered two different keywords even though they both contain the word “church”.

File Name: It’s never too early to start thinking about SEO. When you are creating the page, consider your keywords when you name the page file (if you have that option). Instead of using a file name like “directions.html”, use a file name like “directions-to-Atlanta-church.html”. If you use more than one word in the file name, it is best to separate the words by hyphens as search engines see hyphens as word breaks.

Alt Tags: Alt tags are attributes that can be added to images. Search engines can’t read pictures, but they do read alt tags. So, alt tags allow you to get some SEO value from those pictures on your site. Generally, the alt tag should describe the picture, but you can usually do that in a way that includes a keyword or two. You can add an alt tag to an images by adding alt=”” in the img tag. If you are using a web builder, their may be an alt option or possibly a description or title option. Alt tags are viewable by visitors. If someone mouse over a picture, a text box will show the alt tag.

On-Page Links: Incoming links are great for helping websites in the search engines, but your internal linking structure (the way each page in your website links to other pages in the site) can help as well (though not as much). Use keywords in the link text. So, instead of “Homepage” use “Grace Baptist Church Homepage” or if you want it shorter, just “Church Home”. In addition to using keywords in the link text, you can also add title attributes. Title attributes are to links what alt tags are to pictures. Just add title=”” in the a tag. Like the alt tag, title attributes are visible to visitors if they mouse over the link.

Tip: If you have graphical link, you can use both an alt and a title tag.

Text: Using keywords in the text on your page is probably the most important element of on-page optimization, though the Title tag is nearly as important. Search engines read the text on a page to determine what the page is about. The key is what’s called keyword density, how many times a word or phrase is used on a page compared to how much text there is. The more times a word or phrase is used, the more important that word or phrase is (except for words like “and” and “the”). The trick with optimizing text is getting the right balance. You want to use keywords multiple times on a page, but not over-do it. It’s difficult to say how many times you should use your keywords, as it will depend on how much text you have on your page, but I’d suggest using the keywords at least three times.

H tags: H tags are used for paragraph headings and titles. There are 6 H tags, H1 through H6 (creative huh?). In HTML these tags include several characteristics, including size, weight (boldness), and a line break. An H1 tag will be very large and bold, while an H6 tag is small. Because these tags are used for headings and titles, the search engines place extra weight on words used in H tags. The weight they give also depends on which H tag is used. H1 is given more weight than H3 and H3 more weight than H4. Be sure to use your keywords in H tags. If you do not like the appearance of the text when it’s placed in an H tag, then you can use CSS or HTML to change the font attributes, though there is some debate as to whether that effects the amount of weight the search engines give the H tag.

Baby Steps
Optimization is a comprised of several small elements that work together to get the result of higher rankings for targeted keywords. Each element adds to the affect. You may find, however, that you cannot or do not want to optimize every element of your page. That can affect the results, but just because you can’t do everything, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do anything. Every element you optimize is another step towards that #1 ranking.

Make It Natural:
One of the most difficult aspects of on-page optimization is balancing the optimization and the experience of the visitors. You should always design for your visitors. The search engines should always be second. After all, does it matter if you get thousands of visitors if they all leave after 3 seconds because they can’t stand being on your site. So, it’s a balance. Choose keywords wisely so they naturally fit into the topic of the page and then work them into the text in way that is natural to the visitor.

Don’t Leave Your Net in the Boat!
Whether you do it yourself or hire an expert SEO, Optimize Your Website; not just your homepage, all your web pages. Each page is like a fishing net. Not optimizing a page is like leaving that net in your boat instead of using it to catch fish (or visitors). This is something to consider even before you create your website when you are choosing your web host. Many hosts include web builders that either make it very difficult to fully optimize a website or completely impossible. Make sure you choose a web host that allows you to fully optimize your website and then make sure you take the time to optimize. It will be well worth it.

A Comparison Between 2 Popular Article Directory Scripts

You want to run an article directory and can't decide which script to use. In this article I compare 2 of the more popular article directory scripts and try to decide which I prefer and will tell you why.

Setting A Directory Up

Article Dashboard: I launched my first directory using the free Article Dashboard script on July 3rd 2007. It took about 3 weeks and many visits to the Article Dashboard forum asking for advice to get it up and running.

Article Friendly: I set my paid for Article Friendly script directory up on November 3rd 2008. It took 1 hour to get it up and running with no help.

Why the difference? First time round I was new to php and absolutely hopeless with understanding scripts and learned more over time. Even so I believe that the AF script is easier to install.

Although the really useful AD forum has been down for a while there are still several forums run by directory owners where you can get help. AF has it's own forum where you can get help with your article directory and also advice about other scripts including AD.

Design

My fear of messing with php scripts has stopped me from doing major redesigns but there are a couple of sites offering very good free tutorials for AD directories and the AF forum offers lots of advice. There are also some great designers out there who own directories and offer design services especially for article directories. Good because they understand the functionality better than a general designer.

I personally have found it a little easier to redesign around the AD script, but as I've been using it longer I have more basic understanding of it.

Running Your Directory

Authors submit articles, you check them and either approve or decline them it's simple - or is it? With both scripts you can set articles to auto approve. The function is inbuilt in the AF script alongside mass keyword approval - or disapproval but with the AD script you need to mess with the coding or get an add on. Personally I would never auto approve articles, there are too many people out there who want to submit adverts, plagiarised articles and basic crap rather than the quality articles that any website owner would want on their site.

There are quite a lot of add ons available for the Article Dashboard script, some free and some paid for and some of which I use. A duplicate title checker is a must and that I got free. Whenever somebody submits an article with the same title it is flagged. Sometimes it's the same article, sometimes it's just an author being unlucky and I can let them know that they need to change their title. Article friendly has a duplicate checker built in.

Article Friendly also has an automatic decline function if an article's word count is lower than the amount that you choose to set up in the dashboard. I got a short article deleter free for AD and with that I can set the minimum wordage of articles that I want on the site, but as I could never get it to work it's a mute point. I'm sure that there are more such scripts available if I really wanted one.

Blocking Undesirables!

Another feature that AF has that I like is being able to block unwanted authors with one click. It's not something I like doing but if somebody constantly submits plagiarised articles, adverts etc. banning them saves my time and theirs.

You can also block email addresses with the AF script. I chose to block free email addresses as most of the problem submitters come from free email addresses. I have no problem with free email addresses personally, blimey I use them myself, but as that particular directory is in the travel niche and most genuine travel writers use their website email addresses the block saves me time.

Another good feature on AF is being able to delete authors with no articles with one click. Some of those authors may genuinely set accounts up intending to submit articles but never get around to it, but I suspect otherwise with some new authors who join up and fill in their profile with a link to anything but a travel site.

Those features are only available on AF, but as I said earlier in this article there are all sorts of add on scripts available for AD and more turn up occasionally.

Keeping Things Clean

With AF there is a bad word block area in the dashboard where you can input words that you don't want appearing on your site. If an author uses any of those words the article is automatically declined.

I did buy an AD add on that scans resource boxes for words that you input into the script and you can delete offending articles in one go. That has proved invaluable as a time saver against masses of plagiarised articles.

More Article Friendly Goodies

AFs dashboard also lets you clean up, repair or optimise your database with one click, very handy for those of us who haven't got a clue how to do it themselves. You can also keyword optimise all of the categories very easily, add extra admin access, find articles or authors and mass move articles from one category to another. You can also link up to 4 different mass submission companies from your dashboard if you want to.

Article Dashboard Goodies

I seem to be favouring AF over AD scripts, but the main reason that I haven't converted my AD directory over to the AF script is that when I am checking articles I can also click on and check the authors links before approval. You would be surprised just how many authors submit articles with broken links, or links pointing to unacceptable sites. With Article Friendly I have to paste links in my browser to check them, or scrutinise the html and that takes time.

Another thing that I like better about the Article Dashboard script is that authors can use html within the article body whereas the Article Friendly script automatically rejects articles using html. Personally I prefer to use html where I can as long as it follows the directories guidelines. Html helps to make an article stand out and become more readable. However you can add html to articles in the admin area of Article Friendly.

In Conclusion

There are more features that I haven't mentioned but I'm sure that you get the picture. Although the Article Friendly script is easier to install and use I still slightly favour the Article Dashboard script because of the last 2 features mentioned, but as there are regular updates to the AF script that could change.
